Visakhapatnam: Social media platforms are flooded with AI- generated pictures and videos – and these are blurring the thin line between reality and fiction.
The creation of these artificial images gained widespread attention and ‘shares’ among users, with many of them believing these to be real.
The trending viral posts are mainly the photos of Hollywood actors and WWE stars – showing their ‘presence’ at the Maha Kumbh Mela with Indian celebrities. These are gaining thousands of likes and shares on various platforms like facebook.
Imaginary scenes of celebrity kids are there; and so are the manipulated videos of officials and leaders engaging in confrontations.
Instances are the AI-generated pictures of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anuskha Sharma’s children; and actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s offspring. Even Taylor Swift ‘announcing’ her pregnancy went viral on social media.
Although fact-checkers rush to dismiss these images as AI-generated, hundreds of people simply believed in what they saw on social media platforms.
The trend, however, has not stopped there. It rather took a serious turn when the artificially generated images of former politicians and leaders were used to spread misinformation.
Content based on Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Atal Behari Vajpayee were thus circulated widely among netizens.
Notably, platforms like Instagram have begun experimenting with a tag alerting viewers with a hint that these are “AI generated versions.” A feature has also been added, wherein it places users in fake and mirror-filled environments, but the features are still lagging behind in identifying altered images.
While this technology has created serious concern among netizens, it also has a positive impact. In Andhra Pradesh, AI has been used to project scenes of future urban development in cities like Amaravati and Vizag. AI has also created futuristic visions of state capital Amaravati – as to how it would look like 100 years hence.
These AI-generated images have also been used to depict the city with skyscrapers, clean energy etc.
The AI-generated videos and images of the Tsunami, stormy evenings and visions of the Vizag city has received a lot of likes and ‘shares’ from netizens.
Techies say that despite the potential risks, AI continues to advance, offering new tools for content creation and social media engagement.
AI-powered image and video editing tools offer features like automatic background removal, image retouching and the generation of visuals based on text descriptions. Platforms like Canva have integrated AI features such as Magic Design and Text-to-Image, to simplify graphic design and content creation.
Devi AI generates branded images with logos and business names, streamlining the creation of visuals that reinforce brand identity.
