Vijayawada: Rich tributes were paid to CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury at a condolence meeting at the Makineni Basava Punnaiah Vignana Kendram (MBVK) in Vijayawada on Sunday. Housing minister Kolusu Parthasarathy, former MP Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, former minister and YSRC leader Ambati Rambabu, CPI state secretary K. Rama Krishna, and leaders from communist and other political parties participated in the meeting, paying floral tributes to a portrait of Sitaram Yechury.

Speaking on the occasion, Parthasarathy expressed his grief over Yechury's death, noting that he had dedicated his life to cultivating communist ideology and striving for the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden. He called Yechury’s death a great loss to the country.

“I have heard about Yechury's greatness, though I was never directly associated with him. It is also a matter of pride for all of us that Yechury hails from Telugu land,” Parthasarathy said.

“The fighting spirit shown by Yechury as a JNU student leader, who fought for upholding democratic values, and the struggle he led during the Emergency to strengthen communism were remarkable and should be remembered,” the minister recalled.

The minister added: “Yechury will continue to be remembered as a son of Telugu soil. He raised his voice for the due development projects and funds for the Telugu states after the state's division.” He also mentioned that Yechury opposed the privatisation of government entities, including the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
