Road Safety Initiative Launched on World Day of Remembrance in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam City Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi inaugurated a specialized Road Traffic Victim Assistance Cell during the World Day of Remembrance ceremony for road traffic victims on Sunday. The ceremony included a traditional lamp-lighting event, along with awareness demonstrations using placards and slogans.

In his address, Commissioner Bagchi highlighted the city’s improved road safety statistics, noting a significant reduction in fatal accidents from 32 to 16 and a drop in road deaths from 32 to 19. He also pointed out a rise in helmet compliance from 10% to over 50%, with the goal of achieving 100% compliance.

A major initiative announced at the event was the new AI-driven project to identify traffic violators using number plate recognition, with fines sent directly to offenders. The Commissioner emphasized the launch of the Road Traffic Victim Assistance Cell, which aims to provide comprehensive support to the families of accident victims, particularly those who have lost their sole breadwinner. The public can access these services 24/7 via the helpline 7995095799.
