Major projects in Dowleswaram and Vijjeswaram are set to improve drinking water access across multiple districts.
Kakinada: The rural water supply (RWS) department has prepared an action plan at an estimated cost of Rs 2,900 crore in East Godavari district. The state government will share 50 per cent cost of the project that will come under the Jal Jeevan Mission programme.
The department has proposed a project at Dowleswaram which will cover Rajamahendravaram rural, Kadiam, Bikkavolu and Anaparthi mandals along with portions of Kakinada and Konaseema districts at an estimated cost of Rs 1,650 crore. Another project at Vijjeswaram will cover Undrajavaram, Peravali, Nidadavole, Chagallu, Kovvuru and Tallapudi mandals along with West Godavari district at a cost of Rs 14 crore.
RWS superintendent engineer B. V. Giri said while tenders for the two projects have been completed, work will start in April. He said Polavaram reservoir at right bank covering Gopalapuram, Devarapalli, Nallajerla mandals and Eluru district will have an estimated cost of Rs 450 crore while Polavaram reservoir at left bank covering Gokavaram, Seethanagaram, Korukonda, Rajanagaram and Rangampeta mandals will have an estimated cost of Rs 750 crore. Both these projects are yet to be sanctioned.
He said the five central water schemes at Sri Satya Sai Trust in ASR district are running with four other schemes like Tadipudi, Rangampeta, Kadiyam and Chagallu. He said while RWS will give technical support to gram panchayats in dealing with supply issues and will provide infrastructure, pipelines, tap connections, maintenance will rest with grama panchayats.
He said there are 308 MPWS schemes, 691 PWS schemes, five CPWS and 2116 hand pumps covering 14.75 lakh people in 18 mandals of the district. He said every year a crash programme is conducted from February 1 to March 15 to prepare for summer water supply.
He said 141 hand pumps and 59 MPW schemes were repaired this year while all drinking water schemes are in good condition. He asked people to dial a special cell on 9100121190 from 8 am to 8 pm if they have any issues.
