Sankranti: Food safety officials raid eateries, sweet- makers to avoid adulteration

Vijayawada: Food safety authorities are raiding hotels and restaurants etc on Sankranthi-eve to inspect the quality of manufacture, storage and sale of sweets and other edibles, on the eve of the Sankranti festival.

Karkhanas and sweet shops are also being inspected by the officials in Tirupati from Tuesday. Officials say there were allegations that the eateries were providing substandard food while the pilgrim arrivals in the temple town has majorly increased in the festival season.
Food safety authorities say they will be taking up a similar exercise in other districts too.
Food safety joint controller Poornachandra Rao said, “We have started a special drive to inspect hotels and restaurants and also sweet makers will initiate action as per norms if food samples being collected and sent to the food labs are found to be adulterated.”

There however is skepticism about the present action by the food safety authorities, as they do this on the eve of every such festival. Allegations are that they use this as an occasion to make money through foul means.
