School pollution rally triggers religious tension in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: A rally organised by a Christian missionary school to raise environmental awareness has sparked controversy in Visakhapatnam. On October 30, students from a private school participated in an anti-pollution march, but tensions arose when a local resident confronted school staff, alleging that the rally was intended to undermine Diwali celebrations and cultural traditions.

The altercation intensified as the individual accused the school of promoting Christian ideologies among students. He questioned the rally’s legitimacy and safety, demanding that the children chant “Jai Shree Ram” during the event.

School officials clarified that the rally was solely focused on pollution awareness, yet the resident remained unconvinced. The incident has since attracted further attention, with the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) filing a complaint with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), asserting that the rally was an “anti-Diwali” event that might negatively influence Hindu students.

The LRPF's complaint argues that the event could have adverse psychological effects, suggesting that students may have been inappropriately swayed to view Diwali negatively.
