Several flaws detected in VMRDA building construction in fire safety review

Vishakapatnam : Several inadequacies in the context of fire safety have been identified in the construction of the new VMRDA building here when a review was undertaken at the highest level.

An inspection on Monday revealed "significant deficiencies" in the building's safety plan, including inadequate fire alarm systems, insufficient fire exits, a lack of appropriate fire-fighting equipment, and an antiquated water sprinkling system.

The Director General of the state disaster response services, Pratap Madireddy, who cited the flaws, underscored the need for employing modern equipment to mitigate fire accidents. Speaking at the review of the safety protocols for the new building, he issued a warning to the contractors who erected the structure.

Madireddy said, “The safety measures in the VMRDA buildings are insufficient and outdated. They fail to meet basic standards. Installation of advanced fire safety equipment and enforcement of comprehensive safety protocols are essential for ensuring the safety of both the occupants and the infrastructure.”

He said these issues must be promptly addressed to avert potential fire hazards and safeguard lives and property.

The DG warned contractors that his department would withhold the issuance of NOC until all identified safety deficiencies are addressed and needs met vis-a-vis DCP sprinklers, 30 per cent opening to the air, a smoke extraction system or mechanical ventilation, and a 50 kg DCP powder trolley.

He said employing advanced fire safety equipment is critical for effective disaster response and prevention.

The contractors explained to the DG that they have spent `4.2 crore in fire safety measures and are ready to implement the necessary changes.
