SIT intensifies poll violence probe to nab culprits


VIJAYAWADA/ANANTAPUR: Special Investigation Team headed by senior IPS officer Vineet Brij Lal has intensified its probe on poll-related violence. On the second day of its inquiry on Saturday, SIT members visited violence hit areas, mainly in parts of Palnadu, Anantapur and Tirupati.

Sources say evidence has been found of some contestants and their supporters being involved.

SIT head Brij Lal said SIT officials, with support from CLUES team, are reaching out in violence-hit areas as part of their inquiries. He said if need be, they will register fresh FIRs to ensure that culprits are brought to book.

The SIT head called on the DGP Harish Kumar Gupta on Saturday and is learnt to have briefed him about the progress of the investigation so far.

AP government is expected to submit its report to the Election Commission shortly, based on the inquiry taken up by the SIT.

As part of the SIT inquiry, ACB SP Rama Devi visited the Sri Padmavathi Mahila University in Tirupati, where TD nominee from Chandragiri assembly segment had been attacked. Later, the SIT team reached Tadipatri and inquired about the violence.
