Skyscrapers to dot Vizag skyline
Visakhapatnam: The ten-storied residential buildings of the Indian Navy at Coast Battery on beach road was once envied by the city’s denizens.
The navy is again at it. In March this year, Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the chief of the Eastern Naval Command, laid the foundation for a set of 41-storied skyscrapers for the sailors at Nau Sena Bagh. These would stand tall in the industrial suburb of the city.
According to the realtors, around 20 projects, both residential and commercial, would dot the city soon, amazingly changing the city’s horizon. The projects include a 50-storied residential complex of multiple towers in Madhuravada and a 34-storied hotel adjacent to the RK Beach.
At present, the 35-storied housing complex in Seethammadhara is the tallest building in the city and in entire north Andhra. Two more skyscrapers, each having 17 and 14 stories at beach road and on the National Highway near Isukathota have been completed.
“The city will, for some years, witness vertical development due to lack of space. People, after paying huge amounts, are not willing to live on the outskirts. More so because of the absence of flyovers and Metro Rail,’’ noted the organising secretary of CREDAI, B Srinivasa Rao.
Srinivasa Rao told Deccan Chronicle that the people here will get high-end housing with all amenities that include swimming pools, theater and conference halls in the tall buildings. Most importantly, residents would get a breathtaking view of the sea from the tenth floor and above, he said.
Builders allayed fears of shortage of drinking water, saying the Polvaram project would supply the city with sufficient water.
Advocating a horizontal development, vice president of CREDAI, E Ashok Kumar, said it was too early to go for skyscrapers in a small two-tier city like Visakhapatnam. “On the negative side, there will be plenty of load on basic infrastructure like water, roads, power and clearance of garbage,’’ Kumar said.

“Instead, there was plenty of space in Madhurawada, Endada and Anandapuram, where there is abundant scope for affordable housing.”
Bheemili MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao suggested that builders develop the space between the Bhogapuram International Airport and Visakhapatnam city, as a six-lane road would create an easy and fast access to the city.
