Special Police Wing and Suraksha App for Women’s Safety: HM Anita

Week-long Women’s Day celebrations focus on safety, surveillance, and swift justice for women.

Vijayawada: Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita has asked the police force to take strong steps for women's safety, including the introduction of a ‘Suraksha’ App to mark International Women’s Day on March 8.

Week-long celebrations for Women’s Day would be held from March 1 to March 7.

The home minister held a review meeting with DGP Harish Kumar Gupta and other senior police officials to assess the effectiveness of governmental steps for women’s security.

Anita discussed the establishment of help desks and staffing to enhance support for women. The newly planned ‘Suraksha’ app should have additional safety measures. A special wing would be created in the police force to be of more help to women. It would be having adequate staff and arrange special training for women police personnel, she said.

She stressed that charge sheets in POCSO cases be prepared meticulously and swiftly to expedite the punishment of the offenders. “There should be an enhancement of surveillance through the formation of Suraksha teams across all districts for round-the-clock monitoring of women's safety.”

The home minister emphasized the need for increasing public awareness about helplines such as 112, 181, and 1098. She called for friendly policing initiatives to connect better with the community and reduce crime rates.

Anita called for installation of CCTV cameras in areas prone to crime and the use of technology, including drones, for surveillance enhancement. There should be strict action against those using abusive language towards women on social media, she said.
