Srikalahasti: Four Killed As Ambulance Hits Stationary Lorry On Highway

The accident occurred when a patient from Kolkata was being shifted in an ambulance

TIRUPATI: Four persons died and two others were seriously injured when an ambulance crashed into a stationary truck near Srikalahasti in Tirupati district early on Monday.

The accident occurred around 3.45 am near Urandur village on the Tirupati–Naidupeta national highway. The ambulance rammed the truck from behind. Of the six occupants in the vehicle, four, including a patient, died on the spot.

Police said the truck had been parked on the left side of the road to enable its driver to take rest. The ambulance, travelling from West Bengal to Bengaluru, was carrying a patient for treatment at Aster Multispeciality Hospital.

Preliminary investigations indicated the vehicle was moving at high speed and the driver, believed to be fatigued, failed to notice the parked truck.

The deceased were as Bojon Dulai, 48, the patient; his wife Tagori Dulai, 35; his brother Jatin Dulai, 56; and second driver Jitesh Pandit, 30. The injured, Geeta Chakravarti and driver Rakesh Pandit, were hospitalized in Srikalahasti. All were from Hooghly district.

Police cleared the overturned ambulance with the help of a crane and shifted the bodies for post-mortem.
