Street art on Visakhapatnam Beachfront speaks out on climate crisis

Visakhapatnam: The beachfront in Visakhapatnam transformed into a vibrant canvas on Sunday morning as participants in the “Art for Change: Visualising Climate Change” event used colourful street art to convey powerful messages about one of the most pressing global issues. Organised by the Progressive Artists League (PAL), the initiative brought together people of all ages, from children to adults, to express their thoughts and feelings about climate change.

Schoolchildren's artworks stood out for their sharp critique of the systemic causes of climate change, particularly the prioritisation of profit over environmental and human welfare. Their drawings vividly depicted the impact of profit-driven systems and highlighted the disproportionate responsibility of major corporations in contributing to climate degradation.
PAL coordinator S. Ajay stated, “As Pablo Picasso once said, art is the lie that helps us realise the truth. The Progressive Artists League uses art as a medium to clarify and reflect reality. This programme aims to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of climate change through creative expression.”
The event encouraged dialogue on the uneven contributions to climate change, drawing attention to the role of multinational corporations and their supporting governments. Participants noted that the environmental damage caused by profit-seeking enterprises cannot be equated with the minimal impact of marginalised populations struggling for basic survival.
People of all ages, from children to adults, came together to express their thoughts and feelings about a significant issue affecting everyone today: climate change. Members of PAL stressed the importance of addressing systemic issues alongside individual actions, such as reducing electricity consumption and conserving water. They asserted that holding corporations accountable is a crucial step in combating climate change.
Parents participating with their children lauded the initiative, telling the Deccan Chronicle, “Such events are essential for social awareness. It’s vital to educate children and young people about the societal challenges we face today.”
The "Art for Change: Visualising Climate Change" event effectively demonstrated how art can serve as a tool for advocacy, awareness, and collective action, underscoring the urgent need for systemic solutions to address climate change.
