Sub-Inspector Shoots Himself, Dies at Police Station

Case will be probed by DSP-level officer

Kakinada: A 38-year-old police sub-inspector, A.G.S. Murthy of the 2012 batch, died by suicide inside the Tanuku Rural police station in West Godavari district on Friday.

West Godavari Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi stated that the case would be investigated by a DSP-level officer. He clarified that Murthy had been placed under vacancy reserve (VR) due to allegations in a theft case but continued receiving his salary and benefits. Although officers in VR are generally not issued firearms, he was assigned one as he was on duty for Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s visit. He confirmed that the incident occurred in the bathroom, and the exact reasons would be determined through investigation.

According to sources, Murthy, a native of Gangavaram in Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, had visited a relative’s house before arriving at the police station, where he took the extreme step.

Tanuku Rural police have registered a case and are reviewing CCTV footage, and his phone has been seized. His family members have requested its return, but their plea was denied. Sources suggest he was under distress after being placed in VR.
