Swachh ambassador Patnaik calls for plastic-free Vizag
Visakhapatnam: Film celebrity and swachh Visakhapatnam ambassador R.P. Patnaik has called upon the people of Visakhapatnam to voluntarily step forward to transform the city into a plastic-free zone. Addressing the public, he urged citizens to stop using single-use plastic items and switch to eco-friendly alternatives as Visakhapatnam prepares to enforce a ban on single-use plastics from January 1, 2025.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) organised an awareness and pledge-taking programme on banning single-use plastics on Saturday at RK Beach. GVMC additional commissioners D.V. Ramanamurthy and R. Somanna Rao and chief medical officer Dr Naresh Kumar participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, R.P. Patnaik emphasised that Visakhapatnam is a green city blessed with natural beauty, and its citizens are responsible for preserving it by making it plastic-free. He expressed concern about the adverse effects of plastic on human health, marine life, and the environment, highlighting how the increasing accumulation of plastic waste is polluting the city and destroying its ecosystem.
Patnaik encouraged the public to pledge to eliminate single-use plastics and embrace eco-friendly practices, urging businesses and residents to cooperate with GVMC’s efforts. He also inspired the crowd by singing a motivational line: “Determination leads to success. If you strive hard, results will follow.” Later, he joined GVMC officials, employees, and residents in cleaning waste from the RK Beach shoreline.
