VIJAYAWADA: The ruling NDA alliance in Andhra Pradesh, led by the Telugu Desam, is poised to sweep all four Rajya Sabha seats from the state that are scheduled for elections on June 18, backed by its overwhelming strength in the Assembly.
The Election Commission of India on Friday announced elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats from 10 states, including four from Andhra Pradesh. The notification will be issued on June 1, while the last date for filing nominations is June 8. Polling, if necessary, will be held on June 18.
The vacancies have arisen following the completion of the terms of Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy, Parimal Nathwani and Pilli Subhas Chandra Bose of the YSR Congress, and Sana Satish Babu of the TD, on June 21.
Sources said the TD is likely to retain two seats while allotting one seat each to alliance partners BJP and Jana Sena. Chief Minister and TD president N. Chandrababu Naidu is learnt to have decided to accommodate both allies as part of coalition coordination.
The NDA enjoys a commanding majority in the 175-member Assembly, with the TD holding 135 seats, Jana Sena 21 and BJP 8. The YSRC has only 11 MLAs, leaving little scope for a contest.
Jana Sena, headed by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, is expected to make its debut in the Rajya Sabha, while the BJP is also likely to increase its representation from Andhra Pradesh in the Upper House.
TD leader Sana Satish Babu, considered close to party working president Nara Lokesh, is likely to be renominated. Several aspirants are reportedly in the race for the second TD berth.
