Temple Row: EO Shunted Amid Controversy at Kanipakam

Tirupati: The executive officer (EO) of Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka Swamy Temple in Kanipakam, Chittoor district, was transferred following a series of controversies and a dispute kicked off during a recent festival planning meeting.

A. Venkateshu, who held the position of EO for nearly two years, was relieved of his duties by an order of the chief secretary instructing him to report to the general administration department. The decision comes in the wake of mounting criticism over his management style and alleged controversial decisions.

The situation reached a boiling point during a meeting on Sunday to discuss arrangements for the annual Brahmotsavam. The gathering, intended to plan the 21-day festival scheduled from September 7 to 27, descended into chaos as ‘Ubhayadarulu’ voiced their concerns about the EO's management. A major point of contention was the quality of invitation cards for the annual Brahmotsavams.

"The omission of names of the Ubhayadarulu, who sponsor Vahana Sevas and other temple activities, and other important details from the invitations angered the sponsors," told a source to Deccan Chronicle.

When questioned about the poor-quality invitations, the temple EO blamed budget constraints, but this failed to appease the Ubhayadarulu, who offered to fund high-quality invitations themselves. "Kanipakam is our temple", asserted one Ubhayadarudu, expressing frustration with what he perceived as administrative overreach. Amidst the chaos, the meeting escalated into disagreements, eventually requiring police intervention to restore order.

This incident was not isolated though. It was the culmination of long-standing grievances.

Kanipakam residents, Ubhayadarulu, and temple’s contract employees had previously voiced concerns about Venkateshu's alleged unilateral decisions and management approach. "His administration has been marked by disputes with donors and devotees, as well as accusations of vindictive behaviour towards priests and contract employees," stated a temple employee who wished to remain anonymous.

In light of these events, the government ordered Venkateshu's transfer. This news was met with jubilation in Kanipakam. On Monday night, locals, Ubhayadarulu, public representatives, and contract employees gathered in front of the EO office, celebrating with firecrackers. As the dust settles on this controversy, questions, however, remain about the future administration of the Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka Swamy Temple.
