Tiger of S.V. Zoo Park in Tirupati dies

Tirupati: A five-year-old female tiger of the S.V. Zoological Park in Tirupati died on Sunday due to health complications.

According to the zoo officials, the tiger Julie had arrived at the S.V. Zoo on February 13, 2024, from Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Park in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, as part of an animal exchange program.

In the first week of June, the female tiger suffered injuries while playing in its day enclosure. Upon examination, zoo's veterinary doctors found wounds on its left hind leg and ventral part of the abdomen.

Following this injury, the tiger refused food and water. This prompted a re-examination by experts in the presence of Zoo Health Committee members and retired deputy director Naveen from the Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad. The examination revealed a stifle joint dislocation and fracture in the left hind leg area.

During the past 20 days, the tiger had not been cooperating in her medical treatment, apart from continuing to refuse food. Against this backdrop, the female tiger succumbed to its illness on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination at the S.V. Veterinary University revealed that the tiger had died due to intestinal torsion (twists in the small intestine).
