Tirupati to Get Multi-Sport Ecosystem

New training and competition facilities being arranged

TIRUPATI: Tirupati would position itself as a multi-sport destination with new infrastructure designed for training camps, competitions and grassroots development.

Facilities for cricket, indoor games and outdoor disciplines are being readied at different locations in and around the city, while more projects are set to be launched to strengthen training capacity.

HRD minister Nara Lokesh would inaugurate the facilities and lay the foundation for major works on Wednesday.

The projects, taken up by the Sports Authority of AP (SAAP), involves a cricket stadium, an indoor training centre, mandal-level Kreeda Vikasa Kendrams and new infrastructure at an existing sports complex.

A cricket stadium developed at Gollavanigunta on 9.57 acres is among the key facilities. It includes a pavilion with floodlights, five practice pitches and courts for volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho and ball badminton.

The pavilion and basic works were taken up with `1.50 crore under the Smart Cities Mission, while the SAAP invested `8.40 crore to complete the project.

The Tirupati urban development authority contributed `20 lakh for nearby park beautification, taking the total cost to `10.10 crore. Sports equipment costing `5.9 lakh are being procured.

The complex can accommodate 3,000 to 5,000 sportspersons and students.

An indoor training facility, the Nara Ramamurthy Naidu Kreeda Vikasa Kendram, has been developed at Chandragiri on 2.70 acres at a cost of `3.07 crore by APEWIDC and the Roads & Buildings department. The complex includes two badminton courts, a gymnasium and a yoga hall.

Outdoor infrastructure comprises courts for volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho and ball badminton, along with a hockey ground. The centre can accommodate 1,000 to 1,500 users. Sports and gym equipment worth over `12 lakh has been installed through SAAP funds.

Foundation stones would also be laid for playfields at APSTREIS School in Renigunta at a cost of `80 lakh. A G+2 building worth `5.35 crore would be constructed at the Sri Srinivasa sports complex.

Mandal-level Kreeda Vikasa Kendrams would come up at Kota in Gudur constituency at a cost of `2.31 crore and at Sullurpeta at `2.70 crore. A boxing rink costing `30 lakh is also proposed at the Sri Srinivasa sports complex.

SAAP chairman Animini Ravi Naidu said a 28-acre Sports City has received state government approval in Tirupati. “The new infrastructure will change the sporting landscape of the region. Athletes will no longer need to travel outside for training. Tirupati can emerge as a centre for nurturing talent and hosting competitions,” he added.
