Tirupati ushers in New Year with festivity and spirituality

Tirupati: The temple town of Tirupati welcomed New Year with a harmonious mix of vibrant celebrations and spiritual devotion. From midnight fireworks to serene temple visits, the day reflected the city’s unique culture of blending tradition with modern festivities.

As the clock struck twelve at midnight, Tirupati city came alive with bursting of crackers and loud chants of “Happy New Year”. The celebrations unfolded in residential colonies, hotels and university campuses, where students cheered one another.
The hill town of Tirumala, in contrast, saw a peaceful and spiritual start to the New Year. Devotees gathered near the Srivari Temple, chanting “Govinda, Govinda” alongside wishing New Year greetings. It is a belief among pilgrims that seeking Lord Venkateswara’s blessings at the start of the year brings health and happiness.
A young devotee from Chennai described her experience as extraordinary, calling the atmosphere filled with positive energy and memorable moments. Another devotee highlighted the peace and optimism gained from beginning the year with prayers.
Beyond Tirumala, major temples like Srikalahasti and Kanipakam, and local TTD temples like Kapilateertham, Srinivasa Mangapuram, Govindaraja Swamy and Kodandarama Swamy temples, witnessed a steady influx of devotees seeking blessings. Even smaller temples in Tirupati attracted considerable people.
In Tirupati, popular tourist destinations such as the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, Regional Science Centre and Kapila Theertham went abuzz with activity. Families thronged these spots, while nearby attractions like Chandragiri Fort and Talakona Waterfalls added to the festive charm.
Hotels and restaurants in Tirupati became packed, as visitors indulged in special New Year menus featuring Andhra delicacies and international cuisines. “We organised a buffet dinner, and the response has been overwhelming”, said a hotel manager in the city. With devotees and locals shuttling between Tirumala, Tirupati, and nearby attractions, local taxi operators did good business.
Shops selling flower garlands, souvenirs and decorative items reported high sales. “New Year’s Day always brings good business, and this year was no different”, said Lakshmi, a florist.
