Tributes paid to Potti Sriramulu in Nellore and Tirupati districts
TIRUPATI: Sunday witnessed special programmes in both Nellore and Tirupati districts to mark the death anniversary of Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu, a revered freedom fighter whose selfless sacrifices paved the way for formation of Andhra Pradesh.
The various events saw officials, students and citizens coming together to honour Sriramulu’s indomitable spirit and lasting legacy.
At a ceremony in Tikkana premises of the Nellore Collectorate, joint collector K. Karthik and district revenue officer Udaya Bhaskar Rao paid floral tributes to Potti Sriramulu's portrait. The event featured screening of a special video that highlighted the life and sacrifices of Sriramulu, especially his hunger strike for the creation of a separate Andhra state.
Students from Atmakur Zilla Parishad Girls High School presented patriotic songs.
At a separate programme, Tirupati district collector Dr. S. Venkateswar paid homage to Potti Sriramulu, describing him as the pioneer of linguistic states and an eternal role model for future generations. He highlighted Sriramulu’s active participation in the independence movement and his relentless 58-day hunger strike in 1952, which ultimately led to the formation of Andhra Pradesh.
Similar programmes were held across various parts of Tirupati and Nellore districts. Tirupati district SP L. Subba Rayudu participated in a special ceremony, where he recalled the freedom fighter's lifelong commitment to social justice and uplift of marginalised communities.
