Tungabhadra dam likely to cross 100 TMC
ANANTAPUR: The Tungabhadra (TB) dam will likely get gross storage capacity and cross 100 TMC ft in a couple of days following heavy inflows from upstream areas after compensating the 34 TMC ft loss due to damage of 18th gate.
The dam recorded 95 TMC ft of storage along with 34,983 cusecs of inflows from upstream parts on Saturday. With the inflows, the TB dam was receiving more than 2 TMC ft per day excluding outflows of 10,067 cusecs towards high level main canal, low level canal and other connecting canals of the dam.
“We hope the dam will cross storage of 100 TMC ft in a couple of days following heavy rainfall in upstream parts,” HLMC superintendent engineer Rajasekhar opined. As per the present inflows, the TB dam has been receiving 3.5 TMC ft per day.
The TB dam authorities observed that total yield into the dam during the present season was 310 TMC ft as against 99.59 TMC ft in last year and 191.80 TMC ft of 10 years average.
Even as the dam faced panic after 18th gate was washed away, experts led by designer Kannaiah Naidu succeeded to fix stop logs to prevent waste of water from the dam into the river. The TB dam's gross storage capacity is 105.78 TMC ft while the authorities normally maintain it at 101 TMC ft by assessing the inflows and rains in upstream parts. About 1.5 TMC ft of flood cushion is to be maintained to avoid adverse impact of heavy floods into the dam.
