Vijayawada: Two teenagers drowned while fishing in the Polavaram Left Canal near Veeravalli village in Bapulapadu mandal of Krishna district on Sunday. Veeravalli Sub-Inspector Srinivas said that the victims, Shaik Nagur Basha and Shaik Sharif, both aged 16, were cousins. Basha was an intermediate first-year student at a private college, while Sharif was pursuing a diploma in polytechnic.
On Sunday, they went fishing in the canal along with Basha’s father, Subhani. While Subhani was fishing at a distance, the teenagers sat on the canal banks. When Sharif’s fishing hook got stuck, he entered the water to free it but was pulled in by quicksand. Basha, seeing him struggle, tried to rescue him by grabbing his hand, but both were dragged underwater and went missing.
Subhani immediately jumped in to save them but in vain. The police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. After nearly two hours, the bodies were retrieved and sent for post-mortem. A case has been registered.
