Uravakonda Assembly Segment Has an Ill-Reputation

Anantapur: Amid the tense count-down for June 4, several poll-related sentiments caused panic among rival political parties in some constituencies.

The Uravakonda assembly segment has an ill-reputation – that, the party winning this seat would be destined to be in the opposition. This has been so for the last 25 years.

Payyavula Keshav, sitting MLA of TD, contested from Uravakonda in Anantapur district while Visweswara Reddy is the YSRC candidate. The MLA elected from Uravakonda sat in the opposition since the 1999 polls.

As the exit polls of different agencies had shown different trends for both YSRC and NDA in the state, poll analysts were zeroing in on Uravakonda.

Also, there has been, on average, a 2000 votes majority for the winning candidate in the constituency in the past elections. However, rival parties hope for a change of scenario in this election.

A TD leader from Uravakonda said the party’s candidate Payyavula Kesav experienced a positive trend in the polls. YSRC leaders are also confident of a change of sentiment. They said there were positive vibes towards their candidate Y Visweswara Reddy and to the ruling for YSRC.

“The wrong image for the constituency was projected by some sections during the past three elections, but prior to 1994, this was not the case at all,” an analyst from Anantapur observed.

Notably, both YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Nara Chandrababu Naidu did not hold public meetings at the Guntakal constituency headquarters in Anantapur district this time. Fears are that if a CM candidate addresses a public meeting in the constituency, he will not come to power.

Another prevalent sentiment is that no candidate can win continuously for three terms from Kamalapuram assembly segment. However, sitting MLA Ravindranath Reddy is hoping to have a hat-trick victory this time. The TD was hoping to get the seat in Jaganmohan Reddy’s home turf of Kadapa district.
