Vijayawada: Under the supervision and cooperation of the Indian Army’s engineering task force wing, officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) successfully filled the third and biggest breach of the Budameru diversion channel (BDC) at Santhinagar near Kondapalli in the NTR district. However, due to seepages, a small quantity of water leaked from the temporary bund and officials are trying to resolve the seepages.
The 40-member Army wing under the supervision of water resources department official successfully blocked the breach by using the Gabion system, which consists of rectangular fabricated baskets filled with metal, to divert the Budameru floodwater towards the river Krishna via the diversion canal thereby stopping the floodwater from entering Vijayawada city. However, around 500 cusecs of floodwater leaked from the temporary bund which may pose danger to areas in Vijayawada city.
Minister for water resources Nimmala Ramanaidu and Mylavaram MLA Vasantha Krishna Prasad, and water resources department adviser M. Venkateswara Rao supervised the breach-arresting work at Kondapalli. Despite successfully plugging the biggest breach, concerns remain about the seepage from the newly laid bund, prompting efforts to mitigate further flooding from the upper catchment area in anticipation of heavy rains in the next two days.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu monitored the work via drone. Despite heavy rain obstructing the height-increasing works at Kondapalli, Ramanaidu personally supervised the efforts and even travelled on a boat to check the works.
Krishna Prasad stated that compared to Saturday, the flood inflows into the Budameru had reduced on Sunday. To address the potential further flood increase of up to 10,000 cusecs, the government planned to lay a third layer on the newly constructed bund. Additionally, ongoing efforts are in progress to address the seven breaches on the right side of the Budameru, with the design goal of enabling the BDC to discharge 35,000 cusecs of the flood.
