Vijayawada Steps Up Sanitation to Combat Floodwater Stagnation
Vijayawada: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner HM Dhyanchandra has instructed officials to regularly clear waste to prevent floodwater stagnation in the flood-affected areas of Vijayawada. He visited several impacted locations, including Nandamuri Nagar, Vambay Colony, Kandrika Centre, and CVR Flyover, to evaluate ongoing sanitation efforts.
At Nandamuri Nagar, one of the worst-hit areas, the Commissioner inspected the underground drainage and sanitation works. He advised residents to avoid drinking water supplied through pipelines, recommending that they use it only for domestic purposes and rely on tanker-supplied water for drinking.
The Commissioner also directed officials to remove stagnant flood and sewage water and frequently sprinkle bleaching powder to maintain cleanliness and prevent disease outbreaks.
To support sanitation efforts, the municipal corporation has deployed 465 vehicles across all flood-affected wards. With assistance from Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana, 184 tractors, 122 tippers, 65 JCBs, 22 Bobcat machines, 13 dozers, 7 Poclain machines, 25 compactors, and 23 air tech machines are being used to remove floodwater from low-lying areas.
Additionally, he thanked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for deploying 6,830 sanitation workers from other municipalities, 950 sanitary supervisors, 62 sanitary nodal officers, 149 MAUD department officers, ward secretariat special officers, and IAS officers across 32 wards to expedite sanitation activities.
