Visakhapatnam Beach Road bustles with marathons and awareness events

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam's Beach Road was a hub of activity on Sunday, hosting two major events that attracted thousands of participants and onlookers. One rally marked World HIV/AIDS Day, while the other was the third edition of the Sandhya Marines Vizag Marathon.

The HIV/AIDS awareness rally was organised by the department of community medicine at Andhra Medical College, led by Dr A. Krishna Veni. The event drew over 500 participants, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, interns, and faculty members. Dr Sivanand, Superintendent of KGH, and Dr Vijaya, a gastroenterologist visiting from California, inaugurated the programme.
Dr Vijaya highlighted advancements in HIV treatment but emphasised persistent challenges, stating, “Progress in HIV treatment and prevention is remarkable, but the greatest hurdles remain ensuring equal access and overcoming the stigma that discourages many from seeking care.”
A notable highlight was a 50-metre-long red ribbon formation by medical students, symbolising solidarity with those living with HIV/AIDS. The event also featured a lively flash mob and a theatrical skit addressing safe practices and early testing.
Dr A. Krishna Veni expressed her gratitude for the enthusiastic turnout, stating, “This programme reminds us of what collective effort can achieve. Awareness is the first step towards prevention.” The event concluded with a collective pledge to work for an AIDS-free future.
Meanwhile, the Vizag Runners Society hosted the third edition of the Vizag Navy Marathon. The marathon featured four categories – 21K, 10K, 5K, and 3K – catering to runners of all ages and abilities. The race commenced at 4 AM and continued until 9 AM along Visakhapatnam's scenic coastline.
Balakrishna Rai, President of the Vizag Runners Society, expressed satisfaction with the event's success despite rainy weather. He noted that the marathon promoted fitness while raising awareness about Eco Vizag and Drug-Free Vizag, encouraging healthier lifestyles among participants.
