Vizag CBI court sentences three postal dept. employees to five years imprisonment in fraud case
Hyderabad: The Additional Special Judge Court for CBI cases in Visakhapatnam on Thursday sentenced Kodamachili Rajendra Prasad, a Sub-Post Master and I. Satyanarayana and P. Appalaswamy, the then Postal Assistants at the Sub-Post Office in Yeleswaram in East Godavari district to five years imprisonment in connection with a fraud case.
It also imposed a fine of Rs. 7,000, Rs. 8,29,000 and Rs. 8,59,000 on the three accused respectively, amounting to a total fine of Rs. 16.95 lakh. After pronouncement of judgment, the convicts were sent to the Central prison in Visakhapatnam to undergo the sentences imposed by the Court.
The CBI had registered the case on March 28, 2013 against the accused including those accused convicted today. It was alleged that the postal employees Rajendra Prasad, while working as Sub-Post Master in Yeleswaram Sub-Post Office in connivance with Satyanarayana and Appalaswamy hatched a criminal conspiracy among themselves to cheat the postal department and the depositors.
In pursuance of the criminal conspiracy, the recurring deposit (RD) amounts received through the agents collected from different depositors under Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana (MPKBY) from October 21, 2009 to September 29, 2012 had not been entered in the accounts of post office and thus a total amount of Rs. 30.56 lakh approximately of the depositors in 153 RD accounts were misappropriated among themselves and caused corresponding wrongful loss to the postal department and the depositors.
A charge-sheet was filed by CBI against the accused on April 25, 2014. After completion of trial, the Court held the accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly. The conviction comes in the wake of meticulous investigation and effective prosecution by a CBI team presenting plausible evidence which were upheld by the trial Court.
