Vizag: Food safety officer warns vendors against pesticide misuse

Visakhapatnam: Food safety officer G.V. Apparao has issued a strong warning to fruit and vegetable vendors in Visakhapatnam about the dangers of excessive pesticide use. In a press release on Tuesday, Apparao highlighted that vendors found in violation of pesticide regulations could face severe consequences, including up to seven years in prison and fines of up to `10 lakh. These measures are enforced under Section 59 of the Food Preservation and Standards Act, 2006.

The warning follows inspections that uncovered improper pesticide application on produce sold in various supermarkets, such as Rythu Bazars, Pure O Natural, Reliance, Spencers and other stores. In response, 34 samples of fruits and vegetables have been sent for laboratory testing. Should the results reveal pesticide levels above permissible limits, those responsible will face the stated legal penalties, the officer said.

Apparao also stressed the importance of consumer safety, advising buyers to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before consumption to reduce health risks from pesticide residues. This action is part of the National Food Safety and Standards Agency's broader efforts to ensure food safety and protect public health in the region.
