VMC meeting hits tensions over market move and stadium issues
Vijayawada: As many as 92 agenda items were discussed during the general council meeting of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), which was convened by VMC mayor Rayana Bhagya Lakshmi at the municipal corporation office on Wednesday.
A war of words erupted between the YSRC and the TD and BJP corporators when YSRC corporator Bandi Punyaseela proposed shifting the existing mango market from Kedereswarapeta in her ward due to traffic issues during the question hour. Objecting to her proposal, the TD and BJP corporators alleged that she brought up this issue only because the mango vendors were no longer paying her money. Heated arguments continued when Punyaseela asked the chair to verify the records and remove words used by TD corporator Mummineni Prasad in the council meeting, which she felt disrespected her.
Further, corporators from all the parties pulled up the civic body officials for allowing private individuals to collect money from players and install CCTV cameras at the indoor stadiums owned by VMC. They demanded that the corporation take over the maintenance of Dr Rajagopal and Chennupati Ramakotaiah indoor stadiums.
Some of the agenda items approved by the council are- adopting a resolution to petition the state government to provide house sites for houseless poor in the VMC jurisdiction and collecting pending tax dues from advertising agencies in the city.
The council further adopted resolutions to allocate sanitation workers exclusively for sanitation activities in Patamata, Benz Circle, MG Road and Ramavarapadu areas and to procure new mine-jetting machines and deploy them in various wards. VMC commissioner H.M. Dhyanchnadra, civic officials and corporators participated in the meeting.
