Women's dominance and higher voting percentage give hope to YSRC and TD-alliance
Vijayawada: The ruling YSR Congress and the opposition Telugu Desam-Jana Sena-BJP alliance are pinning hopes on women to win maximum seats in the present elections. Women number more than men in 70 of the total 175 assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh.
The leaderships of major political parties are analysing women’s voting trends in the May13 assembly and parliament polls in AP. The YSRC is confident of gaining the upper hand due to its women-centric welfare regime. The TD-led opposition feels the priority it gave to women welfare in their manifestoes would help them wrest power this time.
Voters in AP total 4,13,33,702, of which male voters number 2,02,74,144 and women voters 2,10,56,137. In all, there are 7,81,993 women voters, more than the number of male voters, across the 175 assembly constituencies.
As many as 3,33,40,333 voters cast their votes in the states. Of these, 1,64,39,143 were men, 1,69,08,678 women and the rest 1,512 were third gender. This meant women voters showed more interest than men in the polling process. After a statement from chief minister Jagan Reddy that his party would win more than 151 assembly seats and 22 out of the 25 parliament seats in the present polls, put the YSRC rank and file on cloud nine. This claim surpasses the YSRC show in the 2019 polls.
Women were slightly more in number for voting in Chandrababu Naidu’s Kuppam assembly segment. As many as 1,01,608 women and 1,01,306 men cast their votes. In YS Jagan’s Pulivendula, 95,339 women and 91,484 voted.
In Nara Lokesh’s Managalagiri, 1,29,697 women and 1,21,038 men voted. In Nandendla Manohar’s Tenali, 1,04,449 women and 99,368 women cast their votes. In RK Roja’s Nagari, 90,316 women and 86,078 men voted. In Vidadala Rajini’s Guntur west, 95,211 women and 89,844 men voted.
A similar situation -- of high polling by women voters -- was seen in all 70 assembly constituencies where women voters are more than male voters. The women's domination in half of the assembly seats increased the hopes of the YSRC towards repeating the 2019 win.
The Telugu Desam is also hopeful that women would uplift it to power this time, in view of its special offers for them in the poll manifesto.
YSRC leaders, Malladi Vishnu, Vasireddy Padma, Vidadala Rajini and other leaders noted that women empowerment by Jagan Reddy as chief minister included a rollout of 24 welfare schemes meant for women.
Telugu Desam leaders are claiming that their Super Six manifesto offering free bus travel to women, a dole of `1500 to every woman per month, three free gas cylinders to each BJP family and the Ammaki Vandanam on the lines of Amma Vodi ensured TD the support of women.
