Vijaywada: A youth drowned in the Munneru stream after he and his friend, who had challenged each other to swim across the stream successfully, entered the water. Unable to withstand the floodwaters, they were swept away on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Madugula Chanti,20, a resident of Harijanawada in Nandigama.
According to Nandigama circle inspector Y.V.L. Naidu, the deceased Chanti and his friend, who were in an inebriated condition, entered the Munneru stream, which was in spate, as part of a friendly challenge on Monday afternoon. “While one managed to come out of the stream successfully, Chanti was unable to withstand the force of the floodwaters and was swept away around 3:30 pm,” the CI said.
Upon being alerted by locals, the police rushed to the spot and launched search operations with lifeguards to retrieve the body of the deceased.
