YSR Statue Removed from SKU Premises in Anantapur

Anantapur: Controversy has erupted over the removal of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s statue from the premises of Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Anantapur.

The statue had been installed in the university last year by then vice chancellor Prof. Ramakrishna Reddy. Objections had been raised by students’ unions and opposition parties saying statues of political leaders inside educational premises must be avoided.

The controversy had been continuing over the past few months.

On Thursday, TNSF leaders and student organisations staged a protest at vice chancellor chambers, demanding the removal of YSR’s statue. Students threatened to remove the statue if the VC did not take any action.

Following this, VC called for a meeting of senate members through virtual mode. The meeting resolved to remove the statue from the university premises.

University staff removed YSR’s statue from the premises on Friday.

YSRC cadres have alleged that Telugu Desam and its allied organisations are behind the removal of the statue.
