Reports suggest that YSRC having four MPs in the Lok Sabha would extend its support to Om Birla, the NDA nominee.
Vijayawada: The YSRC is likely to extend its support to the BJP-led NDA for election of the Lok Sabha Speaker in Parliament on Wednesday.
Though the YSRC leadership is yet to announce the decision officially, reports suggest that the party having four MPs in the Lok Sabha would extend its support to Om Birla, the NDA nominee. YSRC sources said the BJP sought its support and this would be done.
As the TD rejoined the NDA recently, Birla can expect the support of 21 MPs from the TD-JS-BJP alliance and the four MPs from the YSRC.
The YSRC, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, used to support the BJP-led NDA in Parliament, especially in the Rajya Sabha, for passage of laws. In critical situations in the past, the YSRC ably backed the Citizenship Amendment Act and the legislation for abolition of Article 370.
However, the YSRC suffered a drubbing in the recent general elections and got only four Lok Sabha MPs out of the 25 elected from AP, while the TD won 16, the BJPthree and Jana Sena two.
BJP parliamentarian, CM Ramesh, said, “The YSRC has no alternative except to support us following their rout in the recent elections, if it wants to protect its interests.”
Leaders from the Telugu Desam, Jana Sena and BJP issued whips to their MPs to be present in Parliament and cast their vote for Om Birla. All the MPs from these three parties have already reached Delhi.
Jana Sena MP Vallabhaneni Balashowry said, “As our party is a partner of the NDA, we will support Birla.”
Though the YSRC was in the good books of the BJP led NDA during 2019-24, the BJP allied with the TD-JS. The saffron leadership changed its tone and tenor and started pulling up Jagan Reddy during their campaign for the 2024 polls in AP.
The campaign of BJP’s top brass like PM Modi, Amit Shah etc helped the three-party alliance win the elections with a landslide majority, granting only 11 seats to the YSRC in the 175-member assembly.
The four MPs of the YSRC camping in Delhi for the parliament session were awaiting an official word from the party chief on the speaker poll there.
YSRC MP from Tirupati, Gurumoorthy Maddila said, “We are awaiting instructions from our leadership.”
