How Sankranthi is celebrated in Telugu states

The harvest festival of Sankranti is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across Telangana, showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage and community spirit. From traditional rituals to modern festivities, Hyderabad has become the hub of Sankranti celebrations, drawing locals and tourists alike.

Traditional Festivities Take Center Stage

The Sankranti Sambaralu 2025 at Nagaratnam Naidu Farm brought back rural charm with traditional activities like the Maha Bhogi bonfire, Gobbemmalu flower decorations, rangoli competitions, and kite flying. Visitors also enjoyed tug-of-war, bullock cart rides, and cultural performances such as Haridasu storytelling, offering a glimpse into Telangana’s spiritual and folk traditions.

Adding to the celebrations, the Telangana Tourism Department’s International Kite Festival at Parade Ground, running from January 13 to 15, has drawn kite enthusiasts from across the globe. With over 100 participants, including 50 international flyers from countries like Thailand, China, and Australia, the event is expected to attract more than 15 lakh visitors. Two dedicated kite zones—one for families and another for national and international participants—ensure inclusivity and widespread participation.

Cultural Events Highlight Folk Traditions
Shilparamam in Madhapur is hosting Gandhi Shilp Bazaar National — Sankranti Sambaralu from January 8 to 17, featuring traditional performances by Gangireddulu, Budabukkalu, Haridasulu, and Jangamadevarulu. Children are also engaging in traditional rituals like the Bhogi Palla Utsavam, connecting them to the customs passed down through generations.
Festive Break for Students
To enable students to immerse themselves in the festivities, schools and colleges across Telangana have declared holidays from January 11 to 17. Educational institutions will reopen on January 18, allowing students to participate in family gatherings and community events.
Community Engagement and Safety
Hyderabad’s Metro Rail joined the celebrations by transforming the MGBS metro station into a village-themed setup, complete with huts, cows, and colorful kites. Authorities, however, have emphasized safety, urging the public to avoid using Chinese Manja kite strings, which pose risks to both people and wildlife.

Culinary Celebrations
Traditional Sankranti dishes are a major highlight of the festival, with families and restaurants offering delicacies like Pindi Vantalu made from rice flour, coconut, and jaggery. Local food festivals in Hyderabad are reconnecting residents with these culinary traditions, preserving the cultural essence of the festival.
As Hyderabad continues to embrace Sankranti with fervor, the blend of traditional and modern celebrations showcases the city’s unity, diversity, and cultural pride.
