Hyderabad: Preventive Measures Against Tipsy Bus Drivers Remain Only on Paper

Hyderabad: Following the accident involving a private bus on the Narsingi ORR on Sunday night, many passengers wondered how drivers, who had consumed alcohol, were allowed at the steering wheel.

The accident in this instance happened when its driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, lost control due to over speeding and the vehicle overturned and led to the death of two passengers and left two others severely injured.

The bus driver’s blood alcohol level was 187. A case has been registered against the driver and investigation underway, said police.

Some passengers displayed panic and spoke to Deccan Chronicle.

"It's important to ensure that drivers are sober before they take on these long journeys because it's a matter of life and death. There is a need for immediate implementation of strict policies including the use of breathalyzers to test drivers for intoxication before they start their journey," said Shashi Kanth.

Hyderabad traffic DCP Rahul Hegde, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, said, "As part of our routine checks, we regularly conduct drunk driving checks. Similarly, private travel owners are responsible for ensuring the safe transportation of passengers. They must check the drivers for alcohol consumption by conducting breathalyzer tests, which is very important, especially since many private buses start their journeys at night. The safety of passengers is paramount. Private travel companies have been given specific instructions regarding this matter."

Meanwhile, Cyberabad joint CP D. Joel Davis explained, "Travel owners must carry a breathalyzer, which costs less than `30,000. We advise them to compulsorily check the driver's condition before commencing the journey. If passengers witness the driver consuming alcohol during breaks, they should report it to the travel owners and police as well."
