Hygiene, Water Issues Plague Musheerabad Government School

Hyderabad: Even as the Musheerabad Government School has achieved digitalisation, concerns persist regarding cleanliness, water stagnation and pending construction works, posing health threats to students.

“The issue of water stagnation has persisted for a long time. Water stagnates on the playground and sometimes it is difficult for students to reach their classrooms. We have asked the GHMC to solve this issue,” a source from the school’s administration department said.

There is work going on to divert stagnated water, but no permanent solution for the same has been found. The construction of a new high school building has led to the piling up of garbage, making it a breeding ground for insects. Mosquitoes breed in the stagnant water, making the possibility of students getting infected with diseases like dengue and malaria higher.

When asked about why the construction of the building, which was started months back, has remained incomplete, the source said, “When the BRS government was in power, it had sanctioned funds for the renovation of the government school. However, immediately after the election code had come into force, the sanction of funds was stopped leading to the contractor leaving the work pending.”

As part of the maintenance works, washrooms in the schools were renovated. However, Siri, a former student of the school, said, “The washrooms remained clean for a few months, but later, their cleanliness was compromised. A lot of times, there was no running water in the taps.”

The source from the school admininistration unit revealed that there was a six-ft-long snake spotted in the school a few years ago. While the school management had reacted to the incident immediately, it is still a risky affair for students studying in the school.

Siri said, “I had spotted that snake once and had immediately informed the Head Mistress about the same. I have not spotted it again though.”
