Inter-faith Marriage: Parents View Sought
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has refused to direct registration officials to solemnise and register the marriage of an interfaith couple under the Special Marriages Act, as objections were raised by parents or other persons against their scheduled marriage.
Justice N.V. Shravan Kumar of the High Court said the objections should be heard. “One should try to reach an amicable resolution, particularly when the couple sees a threat from some persons or parents, if they get married,” the judge said.
The judge was dealing with a petition filed by S. Vaidehi of SR Nagar and Shaik Najeebuddin of Yousufguda, challenging the decision of the Marriage Registration Authority to reject their application at the sub-registrar office at SR Nagar to register their marriage under the Specific Marriage Act.
Following their application, the registration office issued a notice for 30 days, inviting objections over the said marriage, as per the provisions of the Special Marriage Act. However, having received objections from the bride’s father, the registration authority did not agree to solemnise the marriage.
The petition in the High Court also seeks to direct the SR Nagar police to give protection from the parents and other known persons of Vaidehi, as they threatened her of facing consequences.
As the issue was sensitive, the judge said the issue needs counselling and directed the petitioners to implead Vaidehi`s parents in the petition.
