Karnataka bans tobacco use in govt offices, warns of penalties
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has banned employees from smoking and using any tobacco products within government offices and premises, issuing a warning that violators will face disciplinary action.
The directive from the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) cites concerns over health impacts and passive smoking risks to both staff and the public. The circular mandates the display of “No Smoking” signs in offices and states that any employee found smoking or using tobacco products (such as gutka or paan masala) will be disciplined.
The government also referenced the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, which prohibits the use of tobacco in public spaces, and the Karnataka State Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 2021, which restricts consumption of intoxicants in public.
