Koppal: The body of 27-year-old Hyderabad-based Dr Ananya Rao, who drowned in the Tungabhadra River near Sanapur in Gangavathi taluk, was recovered on Thursday evening after an extensive search operation.
Dr Rao, preparing for her MD, had travelled to Hampi with two friends on a three-day trip. On Wednesday, while on their way to Anjanadri, they stopped by the river. Seeing the flowing water, she decided to swim and asked her friends to record a video of her dive.
A video, now viral, shows her initially hesitating before jumping in. She swam for a few minutes but struggled against the strong current and drowned.
"Teams including SDRF, NDRF and local authorities conducted a search operation. A team from a local company and drone surveillance were also involved. After hours of search efforts, her body was found a few metres downstream," Ballari Range IGP B.S. Lokesh Kumar told Deccan Chronicle.
According to sources, Dr Rao was related to a Telangana MLA. Upon learning of the incident, family members, including two politicians, rushed to the site. Authorities have urged tourists to exercise caution while swimming in unfamiliar waters.
