Ballari: In a major breakthrough, Ballari police have arrested seven individuals involved in the abduction of pediatrician Dr. Sunil Kumar. One of the accused, who attempted to attack the police, was shot in the leg and subdued. The police have seized vehicles, mobile phones, and other materials linked to the crime.
Dr. Sunil, a pediatrician at the district hospital, was kidnapped on January 25 between 6:00 and 6:30 am. Following an immediate search operation, he was rescued by the evening of the same day. The case was reported at Gandhinagar Police Station, and a special investigation team led by Brucepet Police Station Inspector M.N. Sindhoor was formed to track down the accused, who had initially gone into hiding.
Under the supervision of Ballari Range IGP B.S. Lokesh Kumar and Ballari SP Dr. Shobha Rani, police launched an extensive manhunt. The arrested individuals have been identified as S. Srikanth (44), Y. Bojaraj (25), S. Rakesh (44), S. Sai alias Bisnalli Sai (21), K. Tarun Kumar (22), Umesh Yadav alias Arun alias Patti (25), and K. Purushottam (37). The suspects, hailing from different areas in Ballari and Vijayanagara districts, were involved in planning and executing the kidnapping.
Among them, Srikanth and Rakesh have prior robbery cases, and police are investigating whether the others have criminal records. After committing the crime, the accused remained hidden within Ballari district. "Our investigation so far indicates that the kidnapping was for ransom," said SP Dr. Shobha Rani.
Based on the victim’s description of their conversation, police suspected the kidnappers were locals. CCTV footage of a suspicious car provided a crucial lead, enabling authorities to track down the suspects. The police pursued the vehicle and successfully apprehended all seven individuals.
During the operation, Srikanth attempted to attack the police, injuring a constable. In self-defense, Inspector Sindhoor fired at his right leg, injuring and subduing him. The incident occurred at Moka Road. Both Srikanth and the injured police constable are currently receiving treatment.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details regarding the kidnapping and any possible links to other criminal activities.
