BJP Criticizes Karnataka Govt Over High-Profile Naxal Surrender Event
Mangaluru: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have strongly criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government for the manner in which a recent Naxal surrender was handled. The event, held at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's official residence in Bengaluru, saw six Naxals—formerly active in the Western Ghats—surrender in the presence of the Chief Minister and Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
N. Ravi Kumar, a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, questioned the appropriateness of the high-profile setting. “While it is commendable if Naxals surrender and their issues are resolved, should the Chief Minister himself oversee the event? Is it appropriate for such a ceremony to be held at the Chief Minister’s office?” he said in a statement.
He argued that the surrender process should be conducted under police supervision rather than turned into a high-profile political event. Ravi Kumar also raised concerns about justice for victims of Naxal violence and expressed doubts about the government’s claim that these were the last remaining Naxals in the state. “Is there evidence to support this? How can we be certain there are no others?” he asked, demanding transparency.
BJP state general secretary Sunil Kumar echoed these sentiments, criticizing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s actions. In a post on X, he remarked, “Who is surrendering here? Is it the Naxals surrendering to the government, or has Siddaramaiah surrendered to the Naxals under pressure from intellectuals?”
He also accused the Chief Minister of undermining recent police efforts, including the encounter of Naxal leader Vikram Gowda, by orchestrating the surrender event.
The BJP’s comments reflect ongoing tensions between the ruling Congress government and the opposition over handling internal security issues, with the BJP demanding clarity and accountability in the state’s approach to addressing Naxal violence.
