Haveri: Haveri MP and former CM Basavaraj Bommai strongly objected to the current state government’s handling of the economy.
He highlighted that addressing issues such as leakages in the GST system could generate significant revenue without additional burdens on the common man.
Speaking to reporters Bommai said that the price rise would result in inflation, which he said directly burdens people.
The former CM argued that unchecked leakages in GST, particularly in sectors like arecanut, plastic, and scrap trade. "If these leakages are addressed, the state will see a considerable increase in revenue," he stated. He questioned the current administration's silence on the issue, asking, "Why is the CM sitting quietly?"
He accused the government of taking the easy route by increasing petrol and diesel prices and imposing more taxes on people. Instead, he suggested that proper financial management, improved governance, and strategic prioritization of projects could generate the necessary revenue without overburdening the public.
"The solution lies in tightening your administration, improving governance, and mobilizing resources," Bommai said. He criticized the government for not focusing on increasing income through efficient governance and instead relying on taxing people to fulfill its promises.
Speaking about the state government's guarantee schemes, Bommai said that the Congress had come to power by assuring guarantee schemes.
"We are not saying that the guarantee should be suspended. They had come to power assuring guarantee schemes for the people. Guarantee schemes are for the poor and should be continued. At the same time, resources should be mobilized and the development of the state should also be done," he asserted.
"If special resources are consolidated for the guarantees, we will commend the Chief Minister. However, merely increasing taxes on people without ensuring development is not the right approach," he added.
