Govt gives green signal for Rs 56.88 crore for science centre, hostels in Vijayapura
The mini planetarium project will include a dome, projection system, indoor and outdoor science exhibits, an audio system, and air conditioning

Vijayapura: Students in Vijayapura are set to benefit from enhanced educational infrastructure, with the Karnataka Cabinet approving Rs 56.88 crore for a Sub-Regional Science Centre and Mini Planetarium in the city, along with two residential hostels in Babaleshwar and Vijayapura.
Giving details about the projects, district in-charge Minister MB Patil said the initiative to establish science centers and planetariums across Karnataka including Vijayapura was first announced in the 2015-16 state budget, but implementation of the project was delayed due to reasons.
"A revised estimate of Rs 12.88 crore has now been prepared and was approved in Thursday’s Cabinet meeting. The project will be implemented through the Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society," he said.
So far, Rs 1.44 crore has been spent on the Vijayapura project.
The mini planetarium project will include a dome, projection system, indoor and outdoor science exhibits, an audio system, and air conditioning.
“The facility would help foster scientific curiosity among students. I had personally brought the long-pending project to the notice of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,” he added.
The Cabinet has also sanctioned Rs 44 crore—Rs 22 crore each—for the construction of dedicated buildings for the Dr BR Ambedkar Residential School in Mamadapur (Babaleshwar constituency) and a residential pre-university college in Vijayapura.
These schools, catering to Scheduled Caste (SC) students, currently function in rented buildings, lacking essential facilities. The new infrastructure will include school buildings, hostels for boys and girls, dining halls, staff quarters, an auditorium, a compound wall, solar water heaters, and an underground drainage system.
The government has decided to allocate Rs 1,292.50 crore for constructing permanent buildings for 61 residential schools across Karnataka, including these two in Vijayapura.
