Karnataka Govt Bans Usage of Artificial Colours in Veg, Chicken, Fish Kebabs

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Monday banned the usage of artificial colours in Vegetarian, Chicken and Fish Kebabs across the state.

This decision comes after samples of kebabs had harmful artificial colors, specifically sunset yellow and carmoisine.
State Health Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao announced the decision on X and said, "Considering the safety of our citizens, Karnataka Government has banned the usage of artificial colors in Veg, Chicken and Fish Kebabs."
"Artificial colors are harmful to the body and can cause adverse health effects," the minister said.
"Food vendors violating the rule will be dealt with serious action including 7 years of jail time and a fine of up to Rs. 10 lakh," he added.
The Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 Act prohibits the usage of harmful artificial colors.


The Karnataka Food Safety department tested 39 samples of Kebabs in the laboratory and 8 variants of kebabs had harmful artificial colors. Seven samples had Sunset Yellow and one sample had both, Sunset Yellow and Carmoisine.
Earlier, the Karnataka government had banned the usage of artificial colours in Gobi Manchurian and Cotton Candy.
