Karnataka Govt Probes Maternal Deaths in Ballari, Forms Expert Panel
BALLARI: Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that the state government has taken the maternal deaths at the Ballari District Hospital seriously and has formed a high-level expert committee to investigate the matter. Appropriate action will be taken based on the committee’s findings, he assured.
Speaking to the media after visiting the hospital on Saturday, the minister pledged to hold discussions with the Chief Minister to ensure adequate compensation for the families of the deceased. He also emphasized that the government will take necessary steps to prevent such incidents from recurring anywhere in the state.
"While the Karnataka State Drugs Logistics report found the IV Ringer’s Lactate solution unsuitable, the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) report cleared it. This discrepancy has been brought to the attention of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for clarification. Additionally, we will initiate prosecution against Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals," Rao said.
The minister highlighted that a team led by the Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences was immediately formed to investigate the deaths. Initial findings raised concerns about the IV fluids, leading to a complete suspension of the company's supply.
During his visit, Rao inspected the maternity wards, interacted with patients, and reviewed hospital procedures. He also spoke to the family members of three victims and consoled them.
Rao also met former Minister B Sriramulu, who had been protesting outside the hospital over the deaths. After discussions, Sriramulu agreed to withdraw his protest.
