Karnataka Govt to Provide House and Rs 1.2 Lakh Compensation to Flood Victims: CM Siddaramaiah
BELAGAVI: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the Karnataka government will provide a house along with Rs 1.2 lakh compensation to victims whose houses were completely destroyed by recent heavy rains in the state.
Speaking during his visit to the flood-affected Belagavi district, the Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to supporting those severely impacted by the monsoon.
When asked whether the new homes would be built at the same location or elsewhere, Siddaramaiah clarified that it would depend on the beneficiary's preference.
“If the beneficiary wishes to have the house in the same spot, we will do it there. However, if they prefer to relocate due to the frequent flooding, we will provide a house at another location,” he said.
Responding to allegations from the BJP that the state government is discriminating in distributing compensation, Siddaramaiah defended the government's approach.
He noted that under the previous administration led by BS Yediyurappa, Rs 5 lakh was promised for fully damaged homes, but there were incidents of misuse, and many beneficiaries received only partial payments.
“Thus our government has decided to provide Rs. 1.2 lakh in cash and a house to ensure proper support for the affected families,” he stated.
Addressing the need for a permanent solution to the recurring floods, Siddaramaiah expressed willingness to consider relocating habitations that are repeatedly submerged.
“With the cooperation of the people, we can work towards a permanent solution by relocating vulnerable habitations,” he said, adding that public agreement is crucial for such initiatives.
On the question of constructing new, elevated bridges in the district to prevent submergence during heavy rains, the Chief Minister assured that the matter would be discussed with technical experts.
The Chief Minister also provided an update on the ongoing relief efforts in flood and rain-affected areas across the state.
“I have visited places like Mysuru, Hassan, and Kodagu. Relief work has already begun in the affected districts. Compensation is provided for the loss of life and livestock. Steps are being taken to repair damaged houses, electric poles, transformers, and other infrastructure,” Siddaramaiah explained.
He also noted that due to continuous rainfall in Belagavi over the past 42 days, holidays have been declared for Anganwadis.
With more rain forecast for the coming week, the Chief Minister has instructed all relevant departments, including Revenue, Disaster Management, Forest, Energy, and Irrigation, to remain vigilant.
During his visit, Siddaramaiah inspected the Lolasur Bridge, which was submerged by the overflowing Ghataprabha River. He was accompanied by MLA Balachandra Jarakiholi, who appealed for the construction of a new bridge.
The Chief Minister later visited flood-affected areas in Gokak, including Mutton Market, Kumbargalli, Upparagalli, and Bhojagara Galli, where he assessed the damage and interacted with residents.
At the relief center set up at Government Municipal College in Gokak, Siddaramaiah met with families who had been evacuated after their homes were flooded.
The victims expressed relief at the prompt action taken by authorities. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that the affected families receive food and necessary medical care.
MP Priyanka Jarkiholi, Belagavi District In-charge Minister Satish Jarakiholi, Public Works Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and other senior officials were present during the visit.
