Vijayapura: Bagappa Harijan, a notorious history-sheeter with multiple criminal cases, was brutally murdered near his residence in Madina Nagar on Tuesday night. The attack took place around 9:30 pm when Bagappa stepped out of his house after dinner.
A group of four to five unidentified assailants ambushed him with lethal weapons, fatally wounding him. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Laxman B. Nimbargi, preliminary investigations suggest the attackers arrived in a rickshaw and used axes and firearms in the assault.
"Teams have inspected the crime scene, and efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits. The body has been sent for further procedures, and we are investigating all possible leads," the SP said.
Bagappa, who had been living in a rented house, had an extensive criminal record dating back to 1999. He was involved in at least 10 cases, including six murders, an attempt to murder, and violations under the Arms Act. His last known criminal activity was recorded in 2016-17.
Authorities suspect that the killing may be linked to long-standing gang rivalries. In 2017, Bagappa had survived an assassination attempt within the Vijayapura district court premises. He was also related to Chandappa Harijan, another criminal figure who was killed in a police encounter in 2001.
The police are probing the motive behind the murder and working to identify the attackers.
