Karnataka launches monthly hostel inspection initiative

Karwar: To improve the living conditions and overall environment for students in hostels, the Karnataka government has launched a new program, ‘Ilakhea Adhikari/Sibbandi Nade Vidyarthinilayada Kade’(Department Officials/Staff Visit to Hostels). The initiative, aimed at enhancing the management and facilities of hostels under the Department of Backward Classes Welfare, will was kickstarted today and will be henceforth held on the third Saturday of every month.

The program aims to dispel the perception that government hostels are neglected. Frequent visit by the senior officials are likely to improve the quality of the hostels.

Under this program, officials from the department’s commissionerate, including joint directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, and district- and taluk-level officers, will visit hostels within their jurisdiction. They will inspect the facilities, evaluate maintenance, and submit detailed reports to the commissionerate for necessary action.

The Department of Backward Classes Welfare currently manages 1,277 pre-matric hostels (993 for boys and 284 for girls) and 1,320 post-matric hostels (605 for boys and 715 for girls) across the state, accommodating approximately 68,803 pre-matric and 1,75,033 post-matric students.

During the inspections, officials will assess critical factors such as the presence of compound walls or fencing, the development of gardens or greenery, availability of compost pits, and ensuring the surrounding environment is free from hazards like open water pits, drainage canals, or high-tension power lines near the buildings.

Additionally, the focus will be on maintaining hygiene and safety. This includes the regular cleaning of water tanks, proper drainage systems, and measures to prevent mosquito breeding. Inspectors will check the cleanliness of bathrooms and toilets, the quality of bedding and mattresses, proper ventilation and lighting, and the structural condition of the buildings, including the need for painting or repairs.

The program also emphasizes educational and personal development. Officials will ensure that hostels are equipped with libraries containing necessary books, newspapers, competitive exam materials, and that personality development classes are conducted regularly. Facilities like CCTV cameras, health kits, and cultural activities will also be reviewed to promote a well-rounded environment for students.

By identifying shortcomings and implementing improvements, this program aims to transform hostels into spaces conducive to students’ holistic development, including their physical well-being, educational progress, and overall growth. It marks a significant step toward addressing the challenges faced by hostel residents and ensuring a better quality of life.
