Karnataka Minister Orders Action on Drain Encroachments

Vijayapura: Large and Medium Industries Minister and Vijayapura district in-charge MB Patil directed the officials to immediately clear the encroachments on stormwater drains and clean up garbage to ensure smooth flow of rainwater. He set a deadline of 15 days.

Vijayapura district experienced heavy rain on Monday night resulting in water logging and flash floods in several parts of the district including the city limits.
Patil visited some of the affected areas in Tikota and Babaleshwar Taluks on Wednesday and chaired the disaster management meeting later.
“Task forces should be formed at Gram Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat, and District levels led by the Deputy Commissioner. The task force in the City Corporation should be led by the Commissioner. They should hold regular meetings and monitor and manage rain-related issues,” Patil said.
He instructed officials to conduct an immediate survey of rain-related damage in the district and provide accurate reports.
Taking measures for the safety of school children, Patil asked the officials to concentrate on the urgent repair of school buildings damaged by rain and directed them to submit reports on the status of classrooms.
“Steps should be taken to ensure the urban areas do not face water problems during rains. We will hold a meeting again after two weeks. There should not be any excuses,” he said.
He directed the health department officials to conduct fogging and spraying of medicines to prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases.
With heavy rains lashing the district, Dr. Patil also ordered the removal of overgrown vegetation along the Doni River to prevent flooding in surrounding areas.
