Karnataka: Police dog Icon retires from service
Udupi: After completing more than 417 special assignments across various locations, including high-profile events in Udupi district and beyond, Icon, the beloved police dog, has officially retired from service.
A Labrador Retriever, Icon’s career in the Udupi District Police Canine Squad spanned a remarkable 10 years, with the formal retirement on August 30.
Icon, who was born on August 5, 2014, joined the police force on November 5, 2014, under the care of handler Ganesh M (APC 1444). Trained in explosive detection, Icon's career took off with nine months of intense training at CAR South Adugodi.
Throughout its career, Icon provided service during the visit of dignitaries, including the President and Prime Minister of India, as well as foreign guests. The canine's expertise was critical during high-profile events such as the Air Show, G-20 Summit, and international cricket matches, as well as daily security checks at sensitive locations like Malpe Port, Kaup Lighthouse, and Manipal University and detection of a crude bomb in Brahmavar.
Icon's dedication to duty was recognized with a Silver Medal at the Police Duty Meet on February 22, 2020, a moment that brought pride to the entire Udupi District Police Department.
The retirement ceremony was attended by Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K, Additional SP Parameshwar Hegde, DySP Prabhu DT, District Armed Reserve DySP Timmappa Gowda G, and Inspector S Ravikumar, alongside other officers and personnel.
